The hardness of the tread of a wheel should be selected depending upon the hardness of the surface on which is to run.
In general, wheels running on a soft surface (eg. Concrete) a soft tread (ie. Non-metallic) is needed to distribute the load sufficiently so as not to damage the running surface. Where the running surface is harder, eg a rail, a harder tread can be employed. (Steel or Cast Iron)
The combination of wheel tread and running surface materials are often ´self selected´ by the required radial load on each wheel when compared to the available space. Other factors such as noise, ride, rolling resistance, environment etc. may also influence the selection.
Where wheels are to be used for driving, the coefficient of friction is important to ensure the required accelerations and decelerations are achieved.
